EMR Vendors Stress Usability to Attract Physicians

Electronic medical records (EMR) vendors are not only trying to impress potential buyers of their features for meaningful use eligibility, but they are also trying to show that their systems are easy to use for physicians, according to an article on amednews.com. As the market for EMR systems has grown, in large part due to government incentives for their implementation, vendors are having to set themselves apart from their competition.

A couple of pilot programs have demonstrated that many EMR systems are actually less efficient than a paper system. Some of the ways to ensure physician usability include:

  • Reducing click counts and the time it takes to accomplish tasks
  • Improving screen-design elements
  • Creating consistencies in screen designs
  • Reducing information overload
  • Reducing alert fatigue
  • Matching system flow to workflow
  • Building forgiveness into data entry
